The federal government offers significant tax benefits for homeowners who switch to solar energy, most notably through the Investment Tax Credit (ITC). This credit allows you to deduct 30% of the cost of your solar installation from your federal taxes. The ITC applies to both the purchase and installation costs, making it one of the most valuable incentives for solar adopters. This credit is available for residential and commercial systems alike and can be used to offset a large portion of the upfront investment. Additionally, if your federal tax liability is lower than the value of the credit, the remaining amount can often be carried over to the following year, ensuring you maximize the benefit.
STATE INCENTIVES
In addition to the 30% federal tax credit by filing form 5695 to anyone who owns their own solar panels, Connecticut offers a few perks of their own.

The Connecticut Solar Property Tax Exemption enables you to install solar panels, and not have to pay taxes on the increase in the property value for the first 15 years. Form needs to be filed by November 1st.
​
Connecticut Solar Sales Tax Exemption allows state residents to purchase systems without any sales tax.
​
Their Residential Renewable Energy Solutions Program enables homeowners to choose between selling excess energy back to their utility company in general (Buy-all) versus netting for your household and storing the summer excesses as credits to be used in the winter.

There are also a couple incentives possible for low income residents, including the Solar for All program.
